Call for Nominations, Lemann Distinguished Visiting Scholar
The Lemann Center invites nominations for the Distinguished Visiting Scholar in Brazilian Studies. This year, the Lemann Center will select one visiting professor to be in residence for an academic year starting in Fall 2026.
The Lemann Distinguished Visiting Scholar award is conferred on an esteemed Brazilian scholar – discipline open – who would be in residence for one academic year at Illinois, teaching one course per semester on a subject related to Brazilian Studies. Usually, scholars are full professors from Brazilian universities who have contributed widely to the development of their fields. A salary of $40,000 per semester is offered to the scholar who accepts. This includes some fringe benefits and one round-trip airfare from Brazil.
The nomination must include:
- A cover letter explaining why the person would merit the position of Distinguished Visiting Scholar.
- Proposed courses that the visiting scholar would teach as well as the subject of a public lecture on the scholar’s research.
- A letter of support from the unit attesting that the proposed course or courses will be sponsored by the nominator’s department, program, or other unit on campus. This letter of support must come from a department head, program director, or college dean who will ensure that the visiting scholar will be given logistical support (such as advertising, booking the classroom, adding the class to the course explorer website, etc.) for her or his courses.
- A letter of support from sponsoring faculty emphasizing the relevance and significance of the scholar's visit to our institution.
- A current curriculum vita.
The deadline for receipt of nominations is May 30, 2025.
Nominations should be submitted via email to Lemann Center Senior Program Coordinator Elis Artz, elisartz@illinois.edu. Please address any questions to Director John Tofik Karam, karam@illinois.edu.
